Was the Feng Shui of Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment intentional?

This weekend, I rewatched the old Sex and the City seasons, and I couldn’t help but wonder… was the Feng Shui of Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment intentional?

Her Upper East Side home is iconic – the walk-in closet, the cluttered desk, the bed tucked under those famous shelves. But from a Feng Shui perspective, Carrie’s apartment wasn’t just stylish- it was a mirror of her inner world.

Her space told the same story her love life did: charming, creative, and just a little bit chaotic.

In Feng Shui, the bed is one of the most influential features in any home. It represents how we rest, connect, and recharge.
Carrie’s bed, however, revealed some telling imbalances:

  • No headboard → no solid support behind her.
  • Overhead shelves → constant pressure and “weight on the mind.”
  • Not placed against a wall → lack of grounding and emotional security.

And let’s not forget her so-called “nightstand”- a worn-out chair on the left side of the bed, which, in Feng Shui (and in her case, since she slept on the opposite side), represents the partner’s position.
An unstable, old and tired chair reflects unstable, tired relationships.
No wonder she kept attracting the same tired dynamics.

Overhead Shelves = Pressure on the Mind

Those charming shelves above her bed may have looked cozy on screen, but energetically, they created pressure.
In Feng Shui, anything heavy above the bed symbolizes burdens — mental clutter, emotional weight, or unfinished business.

Carrie literally slept under her own chaos: books, clothes, and constant reminders of stories she hadn’t yet finished — both in her career and her relationships.

As the saying goes, she had too much hanging over her head.

Wall Art and the “Third Party” Energy

Take a look at the three framed pictures above her bed.
In design terms, they were chic and minimal.
But energetically? That trio represented a crowd.

In Feng Shui, pairs are symbolic of partnership harmony:
two lamps, two pillows, two artworks.
Odd numbers can introduce third-party energy or imbalance – and if there’s one thing Carrie’s relationships were known for, it was the uninvited third.

A Bed Without Boundaries

Also, Carrie’s bed wasn’t in a separate bedroom — it floated freely in the middle of her apartment, blending with her workspace and living area.
In Feng Shui, the bedroom is meant to be a sanctuary, a place that gathers your personal energy and allows it to rest. Without clear separation, the energy becomes scattered.

Carrie slept, wrote, dressed, and worried all in the same open space.
That lack of boundary blurred the lines between rest and work, intimacy and independence, stillness and motion.
Just like her life, her sleeping area was never fully grounded- always exposed, always in transition.

Carrie’s Work Desk: Connection Without Stability

Carrie’s writing desk is another perfect example of how our environment mirrors our experience.
In Feng Shui, sitting with your back to a solid wall represents support and stability — both professionally and emotionally.

But Carrie’s desk faced a window, with no solid backing behind her, just a big open space and her entry door behind her back.
Energetically, that means she lacked control, grounding and long-term support.

She connected with the world through her words — her column was her voice, her outlet, her bridge to others. Yet, like the ever-changing view outside her window, her connections were fleeting.
Ideas, lovers, and opportunities all flowed in and out of her control- beautiful, inspiring, but never quite steady.

Her workspace reflected her career energy perfectly:
visible, expressive, but no real stability or authority.

When Space Reflects the Self

Intentional or not, Carrie’s life was reflected in her home- vibrant, expressive, but always a little unsettled.
And this is the quiet truth Feng Shui reminds us of:
our environment is not separate from our story.

We think we’re shaping our homes,
but in reality, our homes are shaping us.
